The Potential of AI Technology in Reuniting an Orphaned Orca with its Pod

Herbert River, North Queensland, Australia was living in fear of a massive 3.9-metre (12.8-foot) saltwater crocodile that had been wreaking havoc in the area. The residents reported the aggressive creature to authorities after it displayed unusual behavior, attacking one resident while he mowed his lawn and devouring three of his neighbor’s chickens.

Saltwater crocodiles are known to be the largest living reptiles globally, with males weighing up to 1,000-1,500 kilograms (2,200-3,300 pounds) and reaching lengths of 6 meters (20 feet). Lawrence Perticato, who resided on the river all his life, expressed relief at the capture of the crocodile after feeling “on edge” for months due to its presence in the area.

The crocodile, nicknamed “Herbie,” was successfully trapped on the riverbank and subsequently relocated to Townsville for placement in a crocodile farm or zoo. The capture put an end to Herbie’s reign of terror and brought a sense of relief to the residents of Herbert River.
